Graphing with snacks

Snack time doesn't have to be "down" time. I have students practice labeling and graphing with certain snack foods.
I've used Rainbow and Different Shape Goldfish. Fruit Snacks also work well.

You can label based on color or shape.

Students are engaged because they get to enjoy a snack after they finish their work!

Jot and Slide Number Representation Game

I played this game as a center activity for a small group of 4.
Materials:
-4 white boards (dry erase markers)
-4 Color Markers or Colored Bears, Red, Blue, Yellow, Green
-Crayons
- Worksheet
-Pencils

Place 4 white boards on a table. Place a color marker or bear on each white board. Have students color the top of their worksheets according to each color.

If you have time to prepare ahead of time, you can print, laminate and create labels for each whiteboard.
There should be a board for "number" "tally" "picture" and "word" (you can mix these ups and change the worksheets accordingly.
Students stand in front of table.
Play a song. I love going to youtube on the iPad and playing different math songs. "The Big Number Song" is a favorite. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e0dJWfQHF8Y
You essentially play musical chairs. When the music stops, whatever white board they are in front of, they fill out their part of the worksheet.
If the number is "5" and they land at tally- they need to tally 5- if they land in front of picture they need to draw 5 objects, if they land on "word" they need to write "five", if they land on "number" they write the number "5".
Students who struggle with reading and or spelling may need examples modeled for them on the whiteboards.
You can have students fill out the whiteboards and/or you can mark the whiteboards depending on the skills of the students.
